A development team from our site in Lingen (Ems) successfully developed measurement technologies for novel, autonomous submersible robots in a Germany-wide project. The "Mare-IT" project was led by the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and was funded with a total of 5.5 million euros by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
"After three years of research and development, we have now successfully completed the project," Dr. Manuel Quack (project manager at ROSEN) was pleased to say at the final project presentation. ROSEN has developed the following:
"We are really proud of our development team at the Lingen site. For the Mare-IT project, we have been able to draw on know-how from over 40 years of plant inspection. And thus made an important contribution to the development of AUVs that protect people and the environment," Patrik Rosen, local representative of the owner family, summarized the successful participation.
The submersible robot, a so-called AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle), moves completely independently in the water and reaches depths of over a thousand meters. It will remain there for long periods and use artificial intelligence to inspect and repair underwater structures – for example, pipelines or parts of wind turbines located underwater.
Dr. Ingo Nee (responsible for technology strategy at ROSEN) ranked the importance of the project, "We recognized the need for AUVs very early on and helped build measurement technologies for use in maritime environments and expand technical expertise in this area." The project is a milestone worldwide in replacing the laborious and dangerous use of divers or remotely controlled robots with autonomous systems. In addition, the project has demonstrated how sustainable energy supply from the sea can become safer and more affordable through innovative developments.
At the ROSEN Group in Lingen (Ems), the results are now being incorporated into the in-house AUV development project as we will continue to focus more on the inspection of maritime facilities in the future. "In the course of the energy transition, one focus of energy generation will be in or on the sea. In order to operate plants there safely, we are already developing various solutions – such as our own AUV," said Patrik Rosen. He sees ROSEN well positioned for this project: "Artificial intelligence and robotics are two fields in which we have a lot of experience. Especially in Lingen, but also worldwide, we have many experts in these fields. In addition, we are constantly looking for additional experts."
The lead partner Software Systems and Knowledge Technologies of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) funded the Mare-IT project from August 1, 2018 to November 30, 2021 with funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of around 5.5 million euros. In addition to the ROSEN Group, other project partners included SAP SE, WITTENSTEIN cyber motor GmbH and the DFKI research areas Cognitive Assistance Systems, Embedded Intelligence and Robotics Innovation Center.
