Inaugural Lecture ROSEN Professorship
11/11/2022 |News

Welcome 2.0 Prof. Dr. Atzmüller

He has been standing in front of students for many months, and now Prof. Dr. Martin Atzmüller was also able to give his official inaugural lecture of our endowed professorship. What was it about? The title gives it away: "Making Sense of Complex Data - or: Modeling Complex Data and Explainable Machine Learning". His professorship "Semantic Information Systems" is part of the AI Campus at the University of Osnabrück. In his work, the computer scientist is primarily concerned with interpretable and explainable machine learning, the analysis of multimodal complex data, and interactive decision support. In this way, large volumes of data, which are obtained through digitalization, for example, are to be analyzed, semantically interpreted and thus made more usable for humans.

Promoting technology and young talents

Patrik Rosen, representative of the owner family, who had already described the endowed professorship 2020 as a "mosaic stone of the AI Campus" and was a guest at the inaugural lecture as a benefactor, knows how important artificial intelligence is for small and medium-sized enterprises as well: "With the endowed professorship, we want to make this technology applicable for small and medium-sized enterprises as well. In this way, our region should also benefit. Prof. Dr. Atzmüller's inaugural lecture demonstrated exactly that. The topic is becoming increasingly important in all areas of life. We are all the more proud as a company to be part of progress and further development." This was also reflected in his and the greeting by the President of the University of Osnabrück, Prof. Dr. Susanne Menzel-Riedl. "However, it is not only the advancement of technology that is important to us, but also the associated advancement of tomorrow's skilled workers," said Patrik Rosen, summarizing the commitment. The inaugural lecture marks about the halfway point of the funding period. We fund the professorship with a total of 1.25 million euros until 2025. Atzmüller was previously a professor at the universities of Würzburg and Kassel, the Université Sorbonne Paris Nord and Tilburg University in the Netherlands.
