Interview With Electronics Technician Jonas
8/28/2024 |News

ROSEN Means to Me Variety, Globality, Innovation

Jonas has been working as an Electronics Technician at ROSEN for two years and is responsible for the maintenance of our inspection equipment. In an interview, he reveals how he thoroughly tests electronic components, describes his day-to-day work and explains why he switched from photovoltaic systems to tank bottom inspection equipment.

Jonas, you are an Electronics Technician in Shop Operations Electronic. So what does that mean?

In my position in the Maintenance department, I am responsible for preparing inspection tools after they have returned from a job so that they are ready for the next job.

A key aspect of my job is looking after the electronic components of our inspection tools. To do this, I work closely with our mechanics to dismantle the tools and gain access to the electronic components – the 'heart' of the inspection tool. I carefully put this through its paces in our electronics workshop by carrying out computer-aided tests. If something is defective or changes are required for the next use, I ensure that the appropriate spare parts are ordered from our in-house warehouse.

Once the electronic components are ready for use again, the inspection tool is finally assembled together with the mechanics. Depending on the measurement technology and requirements, we then test several inspection tools on our test field under real conditions in the so-called 'tool run simulation check' to calibrate the inspection tool and ensure that everything works smoothly. I initialize the inspection tool for the test and read out the recorded data, which I then forward to our data evaluators.

What is the difference between maintenance and assembly?

In maintenance, inspection equipment that has already been used is inspected, serviced and repaired to ensure proper operation. In assembly, inspection equipment is manufactured according to plan from new parts.

What are the electronic components used for at ROSEN?

Our electronic components are used in our inspection tools to ensure the safe operation of energy infrastructures such as pipelines or oil tanks. These components are essential to perform a variety of tasks that are critical to the integrity of these systems. During an inspection, sensors in conjunction with the electronic components check the pipeline wall for corrosion, wall thickness, material loss, cracks or other damage, among other things. This allows potential weak points to be identified at an early stage and appropriate measures to be taken. In addition, special electronic components enable geo-tracking of the pipelines so that their course is visible and any deviations can be detected immediately. This precise inspection is crucial to ensure the safety and smooth operation of the energy infrastructure in the long term.

Are you specialized in certain inspection devices?

Right at the beginning of my career at ROSEN, alongside our main business with in-line inspection tools, I also developed a strong interest in non-destructive diagnostics inspection tools such as the Tank Bottom Inspection Tool, known as TBIT. I have also started servicing inspection tools in this area. Unlike the inspection tools used in pipelines, the TBIT is used to inspect tank bottoms. Nevertheless, the work steps are largely identical to those I have just described. The difference is that I have also acquired the ability to carry out minor mechanical work independently and to pack and prepare the inspection tools for dispatch.

What does your typical working day look like?

After I come to work in the morning, I discuss the upcoming tasks and priorities with my colleagues. We decide together which steps to take next, based on urgency and schedule. We then start work and implement the tasks. The tasks are always varied, which I really like and keeps my work exciting.

What qualities are particularly important in your job?

A good technical understanding and confidence in using computers are particularly important. It is also crucial to be able to plan orders independently and process them efficiently. A certain amount of fine motor skills and a steady hand, especially when soldering, are also essential.

What makes your job so exciting for you?

I really like working with the latest technology. I enjoy mastering new challenges every day and delving deeper into the broad spectrum of our various technologies. In this way, I am constantly learning and expanding my knowledge.

How did you get into your profession?

I originally worked as an Electronics Technician in the skilled trades, where I was mainly involved in installing charging infrastructure for e-mobility, setting up photovoltaic systems and wiring conveyor technology. Over two years ago, an acquaintance drew my attention to ROSEN. After taking a closer look at the company, it quickly became clear to me that I wanted to apply for a job here. After a trial working day, which really impressed me, I finally decided to join ROSEN full-time.

How have you developed personally and professionally during your time at ROSEN?

During my time at ROSEN, I have developed significantly both personally and professionally. Professionally, I was able to deepen my technical knowledge considerably, especially in the area of maintenance and repair of complex inspection tools. I have learned how important it is to work with precision and attention to detail, as the safety and efficiency of our customers depend directly on the quality of our work.

Personally, I have gained independence and a sense of responsibility. Working in a team that relies on each other has shown me how important communication and cooperation are. By working closely with the mechanics, I have also developed my problem-solving skills by learning to overcome technical challenges quickly and effectively.

What makes ROSEN special for you?

ROSEN is special to me because the company offers a unique combination of technological innovation, quality and a strong team spirit. Here at ROSEN, great importance is placed on everyone in the team being able to contribute their strengths and develop further. The culture of continuous improvement and the pursuit of excellence motivate me to always do my best and learn new things.

I also like the variety and complexity of the projects I get to work on. The opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies that are used in critical infrastructures around the world gives me the feeling that I am making a real contribution to the safety and efficiency of our customers.

What are your goals for the future?

In the future, I would like to deepen my expertise and understand new technologies even better. I especially enjoy the opportunity to gain international experience, whether through projects abroad or a longer period of time in one of our international branches. Through these experiences, I not only want to expand my technical skills, but also learn about cultural differences and expand my professional network globally. My goal is to develop both professionally and personally and to support ROSEN on an international level.

Thank you for the interesting insights into your profession, Jonas!
