Recently, the IHK Osnabrück – Emsland – Grafschaft Bentheim honored the best apprentices in the district at a festive gala event at the Alando Ballhaus. Within this IHK district, 41 apprentices passed with the highest marks out of more than 3,900 examinees in over 130 different apprenticeships. Among them were our two apprentices Erik and Leon. Congratulations on this great achievement!
In his speech, Jan-Felix Simon, Vice President IHK, praised the top scorers and encouraged them to lead by example and promote the model of “vocational training”. The two instructors, Florian and Andre, are also very proud of their apprentices' achievements and look back on the years of training.
In August 2021, the two began their training at ROSEN: Erik as a dual student in the field of electronics engineering for devices and systems and Leon as an IT specialist for system integration.
A mix of theory and practice through electronics engineering training
The dual study program in electronics engineering consists of alternating theory and practice phases. The apprentices spend one part of their training with us in the company and the other part in the University of Applied Sciences. In the first year of training, Erik first had a complete six-month practical training program. Before he then immersed himself in the theory phase at the University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück in the second half of the year. “The first week was all about onboarding. This included, in particular, team building, getting to know the company and location, as well as the training environment. The rest of the time, we taught Erik the basics of assembly in our in-house electronics manufacturing. This included not only theoretical and practical soldering and crimping training, but also how to behave in manufacturing and among colleagues. Visual inspection, quality awareness and error culture were further important training topics that are taught at the beginning of the training,” explains Florian (Electronics Technician). Once Erik had mastered soldering, the next step was to manufacture electromechanical assemblies, various circuit boards and cables. “This includes, for example, soldering components and connectors on our assembly boards,” he continues.
In the following two years, there was a weekly mix of theory and practice. Erik spend three days a week at the company, half a day at the vocational school and the remaining one and a half days at the University of Applied Sciences. That definitely sounds like variety!
Checking DSI interfaces using a test board
Before the final exams, which consisted of two parts, Erik returned to the assembly area to prepare for the exams and get the last tips and tricks from his colleagues. In his final project, he examined the DSI interfaces using a test board. This involved simulating various conditions that the DSI master was to recognize and, if necessary, react to. Erik completed his IHK training with an average grade of 98%.
Having completed the training, Erik has passed the first stage of his dual studies. Now he will spend a year studying full-time before returning to our company for the final bachelor's thesis.
Extensive tasks in the area of system integration
Like all apprentices in IT, Leon's first stop was in the Helpdesk & Support Team. “First, there is more or less instruction – in other words, theory. This was followed by an introduction to hardware (installing computers, workstations, meeting rooms, etc.) and the Help Desk. We solidified this until the second year of our apprenticeship. Why? Because the field of system integration is extremely extensive. At the Help Desk, you come into contact with everything,” reports instructor Andre (IT Service Engineer).
Get to know the ROSEN site in Oldenzaal
In his second year of apprenticeship, Leon spent two months at our location in Oldenzaal to get to know the operational business and to get a taste of the “foreign air”. Even though he commuted every day, it was a valuable time. After that, his next stop was at Physical IT Environment (PITE) in the Back Office IT and, finally, in the Service Administration Team (SADM). The topic of his final thesis was: “Evaluation of current digital signage systems to replace our outdated system”. This was about the screens in our ROTRIUM or at ROFRESH, where, for example, the new employees are introduced or news are displayed. For the development, Leon had viewed, compared and tested various presentation systems and in the end made a recommendation.
Leon graduated from vocational school with a grade point average of 1.0 and passed the IHK exams with an average of 95%. He is continuing on his path with full-time studies. And who knows, maybe we will see each other again.
We wish Erik and Leon the best of success in their future careers!
