ROSEN Pizza Event – Data Science Edition

With Langos in the Data Dschungel

In a nutshell:

  • ROSEN Pizza Event at the Osnabrück site

  • Focus topic: Data Science

  • Over 80 students and professionals attended

  • Expert presentations, networking and exchange around topics such as Deep Learning, Data Processing and AI

At the beginning of December, the smell of langos and punch wafted through the air as participants gathered for the fifth ROSEN Pizza Event at our company site in Osnabrück. Hold on - what's Langos doing at a pizza event? To add some variety to our event series, this time we served the Hungarian specialty Langos instead of pizza and warming winter punch instead of cool refreshments. The theme was also more specific, with the event being called the 'Data Science Edition'. The main target group this time was not only students, but all those who are interested in specialist topics from the field of Data Science and who would like to exchange ideas for orientation in the data jungle.

Networking in a Christmas Atmosphere

The event started in the late afternoon in a Christmas atmosphere. With a warm welcome, our colleague Annika (Human Resources) and Benjamin (Head of Artificial Intelligence Platform) introduced the more than 80 participants, who were then able to exchange ideas at an open networking session. At 6 pm, the event continued with exciting presentations.

Technical Presentations Around Race Cars, Water Pipes and AI

Participants were able to choose two topics from the following:

  • How to train a driverless race car?
Since 2021, the Ignition Racing Team electric has been supported by ROSEN as a sponsor. The Ignition Racing Team electric is a student club that annually participates in Formula Student events, an international design competition in which colleges and universities compete to build formula race cars. Team member Christopher, a master's student in Computer Science, gave a presentation at the Pizza Event to illustrate how the group of students develops their race cars.

  • Gathering data inside Water Pipes to identify leaks and more
Our colleagues Pascal (Scientist) and Arne (Software Developer) introduced the interested participants to the possibilities and challenges of inspecting water pipes and the innovative solutions ROSEN offers in this field. In addition, they vividly demonstrated how collected inspection data can be converted into information that ensures the integrity of water networks.

  • The multiple AI algorithms behind an autonomous mobile manipulator in a basic transportation task
Oscar from the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), which is based in Osnabrück in the same building as we are, demonstrated in his talk how AI can be used to train navigation, perception, control and task planning in an autonomous mobile manipulator.

  • Industrial Artificial Intelligence – Multiple Deep Learning strategies to handle challenging sensor data
Niklas (AI Specialist) and Christin (Data Scientist) demonstrated in their presentation how the ROSEN Group processes complex data from inspection services using different Deep Learning strategies.

The audience listened to the speakers with great interest and exciting questions arose, which were discussed and debated among the audience. "I gained a lot from the presentations and it was very enlightening to exchange ideas with other professionals on topics such as Deep Learning, Data Processing and AI and to make new contacts," said one participant, summarizing her impressions of the evening. The lively discussions and conversations did not end after the presentations. After all, there was plenty else to discover at our Osnabrück site.

A High Score and a Race Car

The Ignition Racing Team electric not only supported the event with a presentation, but had their race car exhibited outside for demonstration and was in conversation with interested students and professionals throughout the evening. Inside, visitors could enjoy comfortable beanbags and try to beat the high score of our in-house programmed game 'Pipe Inspector' and win some prizes. Of course, some ROSEN colleagues were also on hand to answer questions about career opportunities and our company.

"It was a successful evening and despite the cold, the mood was lively until the end. We had many good conversations and were pleased to see the great interest shown by all participants in the topics related to Data Science," Annika sums up the event. "We are already looking forward to the next pizza event – then maybe with pasta instead of pizza."
